Understanding your responsibilities
Gas safety and maintenance
Employers must ensure gas installations are maintained safely. In premises such as schools, hospitals, shops and restaurants, gas work must be carried out by an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Read HSE guidance.
Safety checks and records
Requirements depend on the installation and use of the premises. Where residential landlord duties apply, relevant appliances and flues require annual safety checks. This requirement does not automatically apply to exclusively non-residential equipment, although maintenance duties still apply. Read HSE guidance.
Servicing and safety checks serve different purposes. Your arrangements should address both where required.
Workplace temperatures
Employers must provide a reasonable indoor temperature. The Approved Code of Practice suggests at least 16°C for most indoor work, or 13°C for rigorous physical effort. These are guidance figures, not fixed statutory minimums for every workplace. Read HSE guidance.

Warm air heating

In an indirect-fired warm air heater, a fan moves air across a heat exchanger before distributing it throughout the building. Thermostatic controls regulate the temperature.
Suspended and floor-standing models offer options for different layouts. Suspended units can be particularly useful where floor space is limited.
In high-ceilinged buildings, destratification fans return warm air towards working level, helping distribute heat more evenly.

Radiant heating
Heat where
you need it.
Radiant heaters use infrared energy to warm people, floors and objects within their coverage. They can offer a practical way to heat occupied areas within a larger building.
Warehouses, workshops and some agricultural buildings may benefit, depending on their use and internal conditions.
We consider obstructions, mounting heights, ventilation and clearances from stored materials. Draughts and open doors still affect comfort and the heating capacity required.
